Our oral surgeons and team are committed to your comfort. We want you to feel as comfortable as possible when you visit Pacific Coast Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, and so we offer a variety of anesthetic and sedation options. We will meet with you prior to your procedure to discuss these options with you and determine which type of anesthesia is the best option for you.
Sedation dentistry may be recommended if you feel anxious or nervous, have had negative experiences with dental procedures in the past, have difficulty getting numb or have a strong gag reflex. There are several types of sedation available at our office:
- Nitrous Oxide – Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a mild sedative which works via inhalation. It wears off within a few minutes after you stop inhaling the gas.
- Oral Sedation – This form of sedation involves the use of an oral medication to help you feel calm and relaxed.
- IV Sedation – This form of sedation is administered intravenously to provide a quick and powerful sedative effect. It is a form of conscious sedation, but you may feel so relaxed that you fall asleep or do not remember details of your treatment.
- General Anesthesia – This form of sedation induces sleep so that you can receive the care you need without any difficulty.
Regardless of which type of sedation you receive, our team will monitor you throughout your entire appointment to ensure that you are safe and comfortable. Depending on which type of sedation you receive, you may need to have someone available to drive you to and from your appointment, and someone to remain with you for a while after you have returned home.
